스테인리스스틸이나 알루미늄과 같은 금속으로 정교하게 마감된 이상길의 기하학적 입방체는 비인격적이며 중성적인 물질의 특성을 효과적으로 드러내고 있어 주목된다. 기계적이면서 건축적인 형태를 지닌 구조체의 투명성은 러시아 구성주의 미학이 지향했던 팍투라(factura) 즉 재료 자체가 지닌 성질의 실현에 충실하고자 했던 제작방식에 대해 떠올리게 만든다.
기하학적 구조체의 결합과 조립, 합리적 배열에 의해 구축된 형태는 기능과 상관없이
심미적 쾌감을 불러일으키는 형식적 요소인바 금속성의 물질과 조화를 이루며 조화, 질서, 균형 속의 긴장과 같은 미적 특질을 강화하고 있다. 구조물의 결합과정에서 강조되는 요철과 표면의 거울효과(mirror effect) 못지않게 자기완결성을 지향하는 형태는 정밀한 금형과정을 거친 제품에서 볼 수 있는 ‘날것의 신선함’을 느끼게 만든다.
Sang-gil Lee's geometric cube, which is articulated with a stainless steel or aluminium, draws our attention since it reveals effectively the characteristics of impersonal and neutral materials. The transparency of the mechanical and architectural cube puts us in mind of the factura which Russian constructionism pursued - the way of carving oriented towards embodiment of the nature of materials per se. The form constructed by the combination, assembling, and sensible arrangement of the geometric cube stirs up aesthetic pleasure and enhances the tension between harmonization, order, and balance, being consistent with metallic elements. It is oriented towards self-perfectionism as well as the mirror effect of the broken surface, and therefore gives rise to 'freshness of raw stuff', which is found in products of elaborate alchemy.
